May 07, 2012 Plaquenil is used in the treatment of sarcoidosis but its main use is in the treatment of malaria. One of the side effects of taking the drug is that it affects eye sight, and eye tests, especially field of vision tests need to be done every six months. For the four years that I took the drug. How to use Plaquenil. Hydroxychloroquine is usually taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage is also based on weight. Unfortunately, cessation of Plaquenil intake may not be a remedy since not infrequently, patients will develop objective evidence of progression despite discontinuation of the drug. Thus, the possibility of toxicity should not be disregarded and close monitoring of the ocular findings is required.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

    • What is the correct way to discontinue use of plaquenil?.

I cannot contribute much, but just to say that I am currently taking Plaquenil at one end of the day and Minocycline at the other; and in my understanding of the many posts I’ve reviewed here – it is not unheard of to continue both and wean off the Plaquenil as the benefits from the AP take hold. I have been on the plaquenil 200 mgm for about 4 months now. I did stop it for 2 weeks early in the treatment due to having to take a coupld other drugs that seemed to give me side effects. I just quit the plaquenil to give my liver a rest at that time. Noticed nothing different. Plaquenil isn a antiparasitic drug with anti-inflammatory affect. Although, plaquenil is a DMARD a Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drug and now at least you have the comfort of knowing that it was, indeed, modifying your disease. Hopefully it will kick in again soon, but it obviously has more work cut out for it, this time around.
